Daring to craft

  • • Marco makes Mediterranean, Nordic and medieval inspired ceramics
  • • He looks to master artisans Llorens, Artigas, Cumella and Aguadé
  • • He graduated in ceramics from the School of Applied Arts and Crafts in Seville

Spanish ceramicist Marco Terranova graduated in ceramics from the School of Arts and Crafts in Seville and also completed design courses at the Istituto per l'Arte e il Restauro in Florence and the University of Art and Design in Cambridge. From a young age, Marco learned the craft by observing the artisans who worked in his family's workshop. At 13, he started as an apprentice. As a young man, Marco put ceramics to one side and studied political science and sociology, launched companies in other fields, and worked in advertising. After years of wondering what his vocation really was, reading The Startup of You by LinkedIn founder Reid Hoffman, and taking a long walk along the Camino de Santiago, he realised that ceramics were his true passion. In 2016, he established Tierra de Sevilla, where he produces modern vases and 14th-century Spanish tiles, convinced that there is no better job in the world for him.

Modern Mediterranean red vase

This vase, handmade on the potter's wheel, is a unique and minimalist piece with red and greyish reflections. The choice of glazes is inspired by the colours of the northern lights. Its Mediterranean design is also influenced by the ceramics of the Chinese Song dynasty.

Mediterranean blue-green undefined vase

This terracotta piece has a faint bluish and greenish colour. It was handcrafted on the potter's wheel. Marco Terranova aimed to create a plastic-looking deformation while crafting it. The design of the piece has a Mediterranean influence, but it was also influenced by the art and ceramics of the Chinese Song dynasty.

14th-15th century inspired tiles

Marco Terranova's tiles are crafted using a technique from the 14th and 15th century. They have the characteristic imperfections of time, due to their traditional production method. The designs of these tiles are reminiscent of those found on ceramic pieces from the Alhambra Palace in Granada and other historic sites in Seville.
