Eleanor is a decorative bowl turned from a dead beech tree that was cut down near Lubomir Kuca’s studio. The uneven rim is decorated with light blue acrylic paint. The bowl has several splits that give so much character to it. The wood has light patches and very dark ones, creating great contrasts and always something new to look at. It definitely has a story to tell.

Falling for wood
- • Lubomír is a devotee of recycling
- • Initially, he worked as a therapist
- • He also makes stationery products
The wooden vessels made by Lubomír Kuča don't reveal that he is a self-confessed amateur. His objects have clean contours, skilfully applied colour features, and the wood texture is shown in its best form. Yet woodworking is not Lubomír's primary craft; since 2005, he's been making unique and popular notebooks from recycled materials. Wood came into his life as a passion. "My great-grandfather was a violin maker, and his workshop is still in my parent's cottage. Once I came there for a holiday and felt the need to spend the two weeks learning something new. And there was this wood from a recently felled pear tree..." That was when Lubomír, a social pedagogue by education, fell for woodworking.

This is a heavily warped lightweight bowl turned from a dead beech tree that was cut down near Lubomir Kuca’s studio. Looking at it from above it has an elliptical almost eye-like shape. There are two dominant tones of brown, a dark and a light one, in the wood. The uneven rim of the bowl is decorated with light blue spray paint that also runs down on one side. It is finished with tung oil.

GRACIE
This bowl comes from a tree that had to be cut down in the backyard of Hotel International in Prague. Looking at it from above it has an elliptical shape. The outside wall is decorated with deep symmetrical cuts that are parallel to the rim of the bowl. The rim and a stripe on the side of the bowl are spray-painted in a light blue. The blue element on the side is decorated with black writing

This tall hollow form vase is turned from slightly spalted walnut wood. It has a narrow opening and the walls are very thin, so this vase is lightweight. There is light blue spray paint decorating the opening of the vessel. It drips down almost to the bottom, creating a very beautiful contrast to the different shades of brown occurring in the wood. Overall, it has a really symmetrical shape.

This oak wood comes from a tree that had to be cut down in the backyard of Hotel International in Prague. It is a really symmetrical vessel with a wider opening. The walls are really thin, and the vessel is very lightweight. The inside of the wooden vase is painted black and there are two big brush strokes in light blue and black on the side, that contrast beautifully with the golden brown of the wood.
