Using hands as wings

  • • Laurent transforms glass into vibrant objects
  • • He considers his hands to be his main tool
  • • He has over 30 years of experience

“Designer? Sculptor? Glassmaker? Art craftsman? I still haven’t decided, and I don't think I will” says Laurent Beyne, in his unique way, full of poetry. Driven by his fascination with three materials – water, light and glass – Laurent creates luminaires and furniture of inimitable grace. Located in the Auvergne region, Deux Ailes develops its expertise on various techniques such as glass cutting process, bonding methods, using extremely sophisticated gestures and devices. For Laurent, his craft embodies a way of working, a way of thinking and a way of living. The pure harmony of his glass forms is loaded with meaning, choices and symbols of the vision that he stands for.

Celestial Twins

These lamps, Jumeaux célestes I and Jumeaux célestes II, form part of the Celestial Twins collection (2001). The idea of the twin is represented in the fusion of glass and iron. In these 2013 pieces, a third material, gold, completes the glass-light duo. The circle is thus complete: crystallised glass and its almost perfect transparency, celestial gold and its almost perfect opacity, light and its maternal vectorial capacity of this same transparency. This piece was made for Laurent's father.

Grand Pois and Très Grand Pois

For these sculptures, Laurent has set himself an "ante conceptual" challenge: Time. To sculpt and give form to time, and to define a massive clock, through the sacred links between what is instant and what is eternal: sphericity and vectoriallity. He also explores the differences between uniqueness and multiplicity.

Telebuilding

Presented in 2003 at the Euroluce exhibition in Milan, the making of this lamp is a hybridisation of "design, sculpture and pastry". The object stunningly succeeds to reveal the blue colour of yellow gold through luminous perforation. The second revolution achieved lays in the principle of “soft mosaic”, through the embedding of gold, glass and silicone which mechanically makes the impossible possible.

Vera and Grande Vera marbre

These pieces are known as "Vera" or "the first overlaps of the impossible". Created in 1986, Vera was originally a glass cube, made up of square strips held together by silicone vertebrae. The combination of three materials – glass, concrete and light – makes it the first flexible mineral cube with a shape memory. To celebrate its 30th anniversary, a new version in marble (Carrara/fine black from Belgium) and extra-white glass has been produced, giving it a crystalline purity. In 2018, Vera Bouzentès is the result of a new mineral alliance (glass/volcanic stone) from Auvergne. Vera also exists in a large model.

Here & Now

The ultimate outcome of the highly personalised technology of glass shards mounted on silicone film. Built around the idea of the primordial geometric encounter of one line with another, the ultimate expression of the cross as a vehicle of the sacred. The scale of the object results from what Laurent was able to achieve at that time: "Ici & Maintenant" meaning "Here and Now".
