How did you learn mosaic making?
I was born in my father’s workshop. This work requires very precise qualities: the ability to draw well, have a pictorial sense for colours, a lot of passion… It is also an extremely slow process. These qualities were instilled in me from an early age and later on at Art School.
What attitude did your father have towards you?
He was very happy that I asked to try, but for the first few years he didn’t want me in his workshop. He sent me to an old craftsman, who has become like a grandfather to me. Then, when I finally reached a certain level of skill, my dad took me under his care.

What relationship do you have today with him?
With my father Bruno there is a relationship of friendship, as well as father and son. Even now, he does not move without me and vice versa. Sometimes we fight and we spend months without talking to each other. Then, usually, I want to make peace first!
How is your craft linked to your home region?
This technique was born in Florence: the Medici family asked the interior designers of the time to have decorations that remained beautiful forever. They saw that paintings and frescoes did not last. That’s why this technique is called 'eternal painting’.
