Scarce peasant shoes

Krunoslav Paun comes from Donji Andrijevci in Slavonia, one of the four historic regions of Croatia. He is one of the last traditional peasant shoemakers in Croatia. Although he graduated as a lawyer, he did not feel himself in the profession, so continued the family tradition of making folk costume shoes, which are called opanak in Croatian. Today, few people wear this type of footwear, so he mostly makes them for domestic and foreign folklore associations and as souvenirs. The whole story with his craft, he says, is coincidental, but for him, it had a happy outcome. He makes interesting, creative, traditional shoes, sandals, bags and boots of leather according to the personal wishes of clients, which then – given the specifics – very often end up as unique.

Braided sandals
These traditional male sandals (opanak) have origins in the Croatian region of Lika. The sandals are made of rolled leather strings that are pre-soaked in water. These shoes are intended for dry weather.

Work Opanci
This style of working shoes are made of leather and are traditional in the Slavonia region of Croatia. They used to be worn during field work, most commonly by the poor people in the early 20th century.

Moslavački Opanci
These kinds of shoes are characteristic of the Moslavina and Slavonia regions of Croatia. Simple, leather shoes with not much decoration were usually made for children to be worn inside the house.

Men's boots
These traditional men's leather boots are designed to be suitable for riding horses. They would also be worn by tamburica (a long-necked mandolin) players and dancers of the traditional dance called kolo. They have a background in military boots from the period of Vojna krajina and were assimilated in the folkloric wear of Slavonia region in Croatia.
