Sculpting furniture

  • • Konstantin started out in sculpture before designing furniture
  • • Corrugated cardboard is one of his most loved materials
  • • He inherited his engineering precision and artistry from his father

Konstantin Achkov is well known in the Bulgarian design world for creating and producing furniture cut from a single sheet of plywood and assembled using interlocking flat-pack systems. Ranging from home and office accessories through chairs and shelving to lighting fixtures, each piece is distinguished by a unified style. Even though his occupation is furniture making, Konstantin holds a master's degree in sculpture from the National Academy of Arts, Sofia. He is keen on experimenting with precise engineering techniques and applying sculptural visions to everyday objects.

Rotor table

The Rotor table is a tensegrity structure made of two rectangular frames and a rod, held in place by taut ropes. The table can be lowered by turning the frame onto its longer sides, since the glass is only held in place by its own weight and can therefore be moved. Due to its structure, the table allows easy adjustment on the ground.

X-Tense chair

The X-Tense chair is a tensegrity structure comprising one X element and several tubular elements with a specific shape. They are kept in place by a number of taut ropes. A metal net is used for sitting and leaning. All this gives the chair flexibility, which allows it to adapt to the person sitting on it and to the terrain. The chair is also extremely light.

Frame chair

All parts of the Frame chair are cut from a single sheet of beech plywood. They are assembled using puzzle principles, without the use of any standard fasteners or glue. The structure of the chair is a lightweight frame.

V-Star table

The V-star table is composed of several V elements and a spatial cross in the middle in one tensegrity structure. The elements do not touch but are supported by tensioned ropes. The cross sits in the centre of the structure thanks to the stretched ropes around it, to which the V elements are attached. The table can be adjusted to the terrain and is extremely light.
