Illuminating historical pieces

  • • Katy works at Made by Ore studios
  • • She spent a term in Oslo learning metalwork
  • • She collects her materials from pieces she finds outside

After graduating from the University of Hertfordshire with a BA in Contemporary Applied Arts in 2015, Katy Gillam-Hull was approached by a curator with a job offer. That opened a new path. Part of her work was a residency with a museum to explore its collection. She became obsessed with objects which were forgotten, fragmented and broken, and the histories behind them. Consequently, her work is inspired by the past and artefacts. Mostly she works in precious metals incorporating found objects, often pieces of ceramic or glass with forgotten beauty or a narrative and shows them in a new and reverential light. In the future we may see her other passion, textiles, incorporated into her work.

Large drop earrings

These large drop earrings are handmade in sterling silver that have been oxidised to black and then worked back to reveal and highlight the punch marks that make up the design. Inspired by antique and traditional jewellery forms, these earrings are shadows of the originals with complex designs simplified.

Baroque pearl earrings

Referencing the shapes and forms of antique jewellery, Katy creates a shadow of historical jewellery. She captures a sense of loss and decay with these ghostly forms, questioning the presumed power and value of these pieces that were not actually bestowing their power on to the women that wore them in history.

Shadow earrings

Referencing the shapes and forms of antique jewellery Katy creates a shadow of historical jewellery. The places where precious stones would be are left empty and silver left tarnished. She begins to question the presumed power and value of these pieces. They are empty promises in a time where wealth was mostly owned by men, and women’s influence was fleeting and fragile.

Jewellery for Henrietta Howard

This contemporary version of chatelaine jewellery takes on the form of an imaginary artefact to tell stories of people from history who are hidden or underappreciated. Katy looks past the traditional sense of worth and focuses on revealing the precious personal histories of the women who wore such pieces.
