From marketing to making

  • • José Antonio is an experienced woodworker turned guitar maker
  • • He originally worked in business marketing
  • • He has evolved his practice into teaching at the school he set up

José Antonio Cerezo, a passionate and experienced woodworker, had a first career in marketing before turning to guitar making in 2012. With the technical instruction of Arturo Sanzano, renowned guitar builder, he learned the mastery of this craft and opened Glissando, the first craft school specialised in custom Spanish guitar construction in Madrid. With the help of Arturo and his own son, José Antonio designed the workshop layout where he teaches students, coming from all parts of the world, to make their own Spanish guitars. He encourages their own interpretations which leads to variety in vintage, acoustic or electric guitar models being crafted. “There is no other atelier like Glissando in Madrid. My students, apprentices and I do not settle for traditional processes, models, and standards. We have a constant concern for testing, improving, and optimising the instruments in response to whatever new technology we can access.”

La Gorriona

This flamenco Spanish guitar was inspired by guitar builder Santos Hernandez’ style, a favourite of José Antonio Cerezo. It has an elegant design with a body built in a combination of cypress and spruce wood to obtain a rapid and potent sound. La Gorriona was built by Manuel de Oliveira Castro, an apprentice of José Antonio's.

Rubia I

This flamenco guitar was built by José Antonio Cerezo. Its silhouette, top and bracing are based on the Santos Hernández model in Engelmann spruce, which gives it an ochre colour with glaze. The head, built in relief, corresponds to José Antonio Cerezo’s signature design. The rosette is also characteristic of his designs through the combination of concentric rings with inlays of wood and bone in black and white. Its light body in cypress wood provides a genuine flamenco sound.

Black Lady concert guitar

This guitar, designed by José Antonio Cerezo according to the Glissando classical guitar model, has a harmonic bracing pattern with the classic fan shape. The head and rosette also follow Glissando’s own design and construction patterns: head in relief and rosette with concentric rings formed in a combination of wood and bone inlays distributed regularly around the sound hole. Constructed in Engelmann spruce wood on the top, ebony on the head, fingerboard and bridge and body in Palo Santo, it has a deep and powerful sound.

Krabbe romantic guitar

Krabbe owes its name to the crab-like shape of the bridge. This guitar is inspired by Grobert's romantic guitar silhouette template dating from the 19th century. Therefore, its size is smaller than a Spanish guitar. The head corresponds to José Antonio Cerezo’s emblematic embossed design. The rosette is inlaid with diamond-shaped bone, forming a damask pattern on a sealed wax background. The wood is curly maple, spruce top and Brazilian cedar neck with ebony fingerboard. The sound is bright and projected. It can be used as a parlor acoustic guitar or as a romantic guitar with gut or nylon strings.

La Coralina concert guitar

This is a concert guitar that has a series of decorative elements in bone on both sides of the guitar’s heel and another relief bone inlay on its headstock. The Padauk wood used for its construction is not very common, but its acoustic qualities are worth the hard work.
