The endless possibilities of pattern

  • • Jemma's paper was used in the ‘Transylvania Florilegium’
  • • She uses ancient techniques with modern colours
  • • They produce over 60 different designs

Jemma Lewis began her career at a traditional bookbinder in Bath. There she fell in love with the marbled papers used in the bindery and set about learning this craft. She studied with the doyenne of paper marbling Ann Muir. At Jemma’s studio marbling follows a tradition going back hundreds of years. A tray is filled with water and a ‘size’ made from a powdered Carrageenan, a substance derived from an Irish seaweed. Paint is expertly flicked onto the jelly-like surface and teased using a stylus, or combed with rakes with hundreds of fine needles. The result is traditionally produced paper with a 21st century twist – where bright, dramatic colour palettes are often combined with metallic paints.

Selection of metallic hand marbled papers

This image shows a selection of six individually hand marbled papers which have all been marbled on to coloured base papers including green, bright red, black and orange. All the papers have been marbled with metallic acrylic paint in a contemporary vein pattern, which creates a very striking look and shows off the coloured base papers.
