Inspired by Yorkshire landscapes

  • • James works in clay and bronze
  • • He holds an MA from the London Royal College of Art
  • • Deep valleys are the biggest inspiration for his works

Since the moment James Oughtibridge was introduced to clay during an art foundation course at university, there was no looking back. Today, he’s a well-respected ceramic sculptor who creates spectacular objects, many of them slab-built and large-scale for both interior and exterior settings. His works combine a beautiful organic form whilst creating interest up close, with textured and tactile surfaces. James is passionate when describing his work, he simply loves creating objects from clay. “The form of my work plays with light and shadow and allows for further intrigue and perspectives depending on its location, lighting, and position,” he says. His art pieces are characterised by sharp lines and curved planes, a reflection of the undulating Yorkshire landscape where his studio is based. He learned his skills from the celebrated British sculptor David Roberts.
