Il Tabarro specialises in tailoring a distinctive garment that has spanned history. Known in Italian as “tabarro”, the cloak made its appearance in ancient Rome, and over the centuries it has known different fashions, colours and fabrics. Fallen into oblivion after the Second World War, the tabarro made its comeback in 1974 thanks to Venetian entrepreneur Sandro Zara who founded Il Tabarro. Sandro Zara was a firm believer in the use of the cloak and was determined to recover its memory, so he reintroduced it to the public on the occasion of Pitti Uomo, the world-famous showcase of men's clothing and accessories held twice yearly in Florence.
Despite the changes in fashion, the tabarro has never lost its characteristic features: cut in a full wheel of fabric, it is composed of two semi circles joined by a single seam at the back and finished with a collar. Each garment manufactured by Sandro Zara’s team is carefully crafted down to the smallest detail, combining traditional knowledge with the high quality of Italian fabrics and expert tailoring skills. Along with its men’s collection, the atelier develops a line entirely dedicated to women, amongst whom the tabarro became a popular clothing item in the 18th century.
