Lighting up life

  • • Goedel and Jan make lighting objects by hand
  • • Their preferred material is porcelain
  • • They compare their craft to human relationships

Goedel Vermandere and Jan Arickx combine their competences to design unique lighting objects together. “Jan’s technical know-how and my pottery experience are a perfect match,” says Goedel. “We have different skills, but speak the same language.” Their collaboration started after Goedel channeled her creativity into a project with clay sculptures as an outlet for sorrow. Out of this project grew the idea for their first joint creation, called Le soleil. “We always kept focusing on beauty and harmony, just as we do in our relationship,” they say. Goedel and Jan make each object by hand, without a detailed masterplan, allowing space for chance and imperfection. Their preferred material is porcelain. “Which is sustainable, yet fragile, just like an authentic relationship.”

This is a lighting sculpture made of porcelain. Instead of following a preconceived path, Goedel Vermandere and Jan Arickx chose to take instinctive tests and explore possible movements. The pleasure of experimenting with materials and processes is the main driver of their creativity.

Méau

This is a handmade porcelain lighting creation that expresses a tense dialogue between function and aesthetics. It is made as one disc-like piece, and as such explores the limits of the demanding material that is porcelain.

Perle Blanche

This lighting sculpture consists of bold shapes and structures captured in porcelain. It is a typical example of the style of Goedel Vermandere and Jan Arickx, known for their whimsical organic forms. These are the result of long-term research and experimentation with porcelain.
