Communicating by form

  • • Giannis studied at the ceramic school of Nikaia
  • • Ceramics is a way of living and expressing himself
  • • He has designed exclusive ceramic sets for the Benaki Museum Shop

Giannis Zois masters the art of ceramic, as he would describe it as a Greek common language. In his Athens-based studio, the ceramicist explores the technical limits of his craft, looking for the forms which communicate in the simplest way. The objects he creates underline the true essence of shape. He designs everyday items like teapot sets, bowls, vases, or even lamps. Throughout his training and the seminars he completed, Giannis was able to learn alongside three master artisans who had a real influence on him. It allowed him to develop his specific skills, notably in wheel throwing and ceramic chemistry. Giannis' approach to clay is instinctive, he experiments with the material led by his imagination.

Cactus Lamp

This ceramic lamp is composed of wheel thrown ovoid-like parts that were joined and altered to resemble a cactus. The object can balance in three different ways giving alternate viewpoints. It was finished with a black semi-vitrified engobe on the outside with a white crawl glaze in various thicknesses. A white glossy glaze on the inside gives a higher reflection from the lamp that is hidden on one of the ovoid “limps”.

Ceramic Deposit Vessels

Various vessels made up of cups, bowls and vases with light cream ceramic bodies made with chamotte clay. Concentric black lines decorate the outside reflecting earth deposits. The vessel is warped in a way to enhance it.

Fiali Revisited

This oval vessel with a crystalline off-white satin glaze was inspired by the permanent collection of the Benaki Museum. It was decorated with a purple lichen glaze on the lower half of the vase. The project was an attempt to revisit an ancient vessel with the forms as the only code of communication between the old and new, the classical and contemporary.
