Inspired by island life

  • • Sebastiano's works capture the beauty of Pantelleria
  • • His artistic research incorporates various techniques
  • • He creates and formulates his glazes by experimentation

Sebastiano Fischer was born on the volcanic island of Pantelleria, a true gem off the southern coast of Sicily. His father, Klaus Peter Fischer, was a ceramicist, who had opened his studio on the island in the 1970s. At the age of 17, Sebastiano decided to follow in his footsteps and went to study in Faenza, where he specialised in majolica, and later graduated in sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice. Since 2003, he has taken over his father’s workshop, where he creates evocative works inspired by the rough and rugged nature of this breathtaking island. “I have always loved art, and being able to create something from nothing,” he explains. “I have handled clay ever since I was a child, and I have always loved this means of expression, because it allows you an enormous freedom of form.”

Sfera Azzurro Venere

This spherical vase is inspired by the volcanic lake of Sebastiano’s island. The incandescent blue glaze was created by adding to the component water and mud from the lake, rich in alkaline substances. It was fired following the raku technique.

Bomba Lavica

The Bomba Lavica vessel is an embodiment of the material forces present in Sebastiano’s island. The glaze was created using organic elements found on the edge of an extinct volcano, such as quartz, obsidian, pumice, tuff, feldspar and metal mesh. It was fired in the reduction chamber following the raku technique.

Selciato Del Gigante

For this piece, Sebastiano drew inspiration from a marine coast located in his native island. The area is characterized by rare rock formations in the shape of hexagonal columns. In addition, the piece symbolises the future, new technologies and space. It was gilded and fired in the reduction chamber following the raku technique.
