This miniature cabinet was created at 1:12 scale. Fernando Setién had a piece of birchwood with a gorgeous grain, perfect for pieces in 1:12 scale and with some incredible tiny knots on it. So he designed this tall cabinet with shelves just to show the wood off.

A fully trained and experienced carpenter, with a childhood passion for building wooden toys, Fernando Setién taught himself to make miniature furniture as a career change resulting from the recent economic crisis. He focuses on making replicas as well as his own designs, generally at 1:12 scale. By applying his carpentry skills, experimenting and adapting materials, and even devising a technique of steam bending wood, Fernando rises to the challenge of miniaturising, choosing the right materials and wood grain to best suit each project. Inspired by architecture, modern and industrial design, he works with ingenuity and patience and never ceases to learn on the job.

Miniature mid-century oak cabinet
This 1:12 scale model of a mid-century cabinet is based on the RY-20 designed by Hans Wegner in 1953. The original piece was made in darker oak, but Fernando Setién decided to work with sapwood, the youngest and whitest part of the wood (oak in this case) which also has an obvious and powerful grain pattern. Fernando wanted to give this piece a unique look. In this sense, the material becomes the main decorative element of the piece.

Miniature replica of the Paola sideboard by Oswald Vermaercke
Though this is a simple piece of furniture, Fernando Setién was captivated by the aesthetic strength of the Paola sideboard by Oswald Vermaercke. The legs and drawers of this scale model, being structural elements, become incredible decorative details. Fernando filled them with metal files as if they were parts of a sculpture.

Miniature replica of a desk designed by Silvio Cavatorta in the early 50s
This miniature 1:12 scale replica is a faithful replica of a mid-century desk by Silvio Cavatorta. The delicate drawers, which seem to float on the side, are functional. The legs and drawers are all hand shaped and a narrow hand shaped strip rims the tabletop. Like many of his other creations in teak, this desk is made of repurposed wood. Teak was a very common material in mid-century pieces, but it is a very scarce wood nowadays.

Miniature version of a rolltop desk
When designing this piece Fernando Setién was trying to bring the classic rolltop desk closer to current tastes. In this sense, all the superfluous and decorative elements were reduced to a minimum to obtain clean and elegant lines that can mainly be appreciated from the sides. As with his other pieces, all the elements are functional, so the roll, the extension and the drawers can be opened.
