Metals shaped by talented hands

  • • Elli's jewellery combines materials, meanings and emotions
  • • She likes to think outside the box of traditional goldsmithing
  • • Recycled materials play a part in her work

Elli Hukka has always had a strong passion for working with her hands and the necessary stamina to complete handcrafted projects, making her a successful jewellery artist. Her decision to stick with this artisanal career came when she won her first award in Helsinki in 2009, a recycling competition for which she entered one of her most meaningful works: a necklace created from colourful wooden pencils. Elli has continued this wooden pencil theme ever since, among various other subjects. She values recycled materials and the stories they carry, but also the art of doing things in her own unique way. She is a doer rather than a thinker, a true artisan who likes to explore beyond the usual goldsmithing techniques.

Juuret – Roots

The idea behind the creation of this gold ring was to use uncut Finnish cordierite, chosen because of where it was discovered, in Pielavesi, which was where the customer came from. The form of the ring was designed to be organic and resemble roots and tree formations.

This necklace is part of a jewellery series made from a combination of various coloured pencils. Elli Hukka used recycled coloured pencils throughout the series, which was born of continual experimentation.

Pikkukukka – Little Flower

This gold ring with diamonds was made as a bespoke engagement ring and wedding ring. With a delicate yet classic style, the two separate rings fit nicely together as one.

Drafts of the Disease – Liver

This necklace is part of Elli Hukka’s series Drafts of the Disease. Ceramic beads are made using the Raku technique. This series is very personal to Elli. She was diagnosed with an incurable autoimmune liver disease, and when working, she was processing the fact that her vital organ, her liver, would always carry the weight of the disease and be dysfunctional.
