In communion with wood

  • • Cristian is a self-taught carpenter
  • • He only uses natural finishes that he prepares himself or buys
  • • He likes to highlight the characteristics of wood

Cristian Tudor opened Atelier Arboritm in 2011, during his final year of university. Driven by a personal need to draw objects and bring them to life, he started his journey in woodworking without any prior training, except for the knowledge and tools he got from his grandfather. He learned the art of carpentry by himself, from books, tutorials and through experimentation. Cristian handcrafts each piece with precision and a focus on aesthetics. He sometimes colours the wood by burning it, thus creating contrasts between the deep black of the burned fibres and the light colour of the natural material. He pays special attention to choosing the right wood and always highlights its peculiarities. Cristian masters traditional joinery techniques and uses only natural finishes.

Căprior chair

The Căprior chair was handcrafted using traditional joinery. Every element of its construction is geared towards the wood's particularities and strength. The design process began by introducing the golden ratio into the drawing. The seat was carved to ensure a natural and relaxed seating position, its curvature inspired by ancient viaduct arches. The surface is flamed, painted with Indian ink and finished with natural oils and wax.

Elm bench

The Elm bench was handcrafted using traditional joinery. The design process started with a curved walnut slab which Cristian had kept in the shop for many years before knowing what to create from it. Butterfly inlays were used to prevent cracks expanding. The legs are made from ash wood for strength. The curved backrest is made from bent elm wood with turned spindles.

Cerb occasional cabinet

This cabinet with sliding doors was designed with matching birch panels and hikite pulls. The dovetailed frame is made from ash wood and has a charred finish. The drawer pulls are hand hammered from brass and the frame has half-blind dovetail joinery. The walnut base has brass wire detail and the surface is finished with natural oils and wax.

Rudimental table

This table was handcrafted using oak wood reclaimed from stairs from an interwar house. After almost a year of staying outside in the rain and sun, the oak started turning grey, developing cracks. The legs were hand shaped from this splitting oak. The surface was then flamed, charred and finished with natural oils and wax.

Low cherry table

This table was handcrafted using traditional joinery. The design is a reinterpretation of the traditional low round peasant table. Because Cristian had only one board of cherry, one leg is made of maple. Butterfly inlays were used to patch small cracks in order not to waste any material. The surface was finished with natural oils and wax.
