Starting as a cottage industry in the village of Kumano in 1952 and growing into a formal company by 1971, Chikuhodo now supports over 100 artisans who specialize in the manufacture of makeup brushes of the highest quality. Located in the Hiroshima region, the town of Kumano is renowned as the “Capital of Brushes” and is responsible for the 80 percent of all brushes produced in Japan. Chikuhodo carefully sources the materials for its brushes from around the world, which, combined with the guarantee of fine craftsmanship, has made it a much sought after brand both in Japan and abroad.
The production of Chikuhodo brushes begins with the painstaking process of hand selecting only the best raw fibres. The fibres are then shaped and bound together by a seasoned artisan using traditional techniques to create the finished brush. In addition to supplying major brands, such as Shiseido and RMK, Chikuhodo also produces their own original line of makeup brushes, as well as custom tools for makeup artists.
