Renowned since the Middle Ages for the production of handmade paper, Amalfi boasted several paper mills in its Valle dei Mulini, thanks to the waters of the Canneto stream. Cartiera F. Amatruda s.a.s. is run by the Amatruda family, whose activity has been attested since the 13th century. In the mid-20th century, facing a serious crisis in the sector, Maestro Luigi Amatruda focused on manufacturing a type of paper that had all the essential qualities of handmade paper – uncut edges, texture, transparency, softness – experimenting with techniques and materials.
Each sheet of paper is produced with natural fringes on all sides, maintaining the imprint of the wool felts. Amatruda paper is not intended for the publishing market only: it can be writing paper, wedding invitations, business cards. It is loved by artists, who appreciate the etching folder and the pads for drawings and watercolours, in smooth or rough grain. The raw material used is 100% cotton or cellulose, that is processed neither with chemical substances nor bleaching.
