The makila is a traditional Basque walking stick, both a practical tool and a cultural symbol of authority and strength. Makila in Euskera (Basque language) mean "stick", "walking cane", "rod", "club" or "mace". Made by hand from the wild medlar tree, it has a horn pommel, a goatskin-covered handle, casings engraved with Basque motifs, a hidden spike in the handle and a tip that touches the ground.
