Located in Lyon, the heart of the European silk industry, the Atelier de Soierie specialises in the printing and colouring of silk. Born in 1994 from an encounter – and the will – of two men: Gérard Genet and Cédric Brochier. The first, a silk printer, acquired his know-how within his family, passed down over four generations. The second, creator of patterns for fabrics, comes from a large family of silk workers and manufacturers.
Both men felt that Lyon was missing a space dedicated to silk colouring techniques, to allow the general public to know more about this important process which is usually carried out in private workshops – with great secrecy. They decide to remedy this weakness by opening the Atelier de Soierie, a private site of production which has the originality of being open to the public. Today, it is also the last workshop in France using silkscreen printing by hand. Specialised in art reproductions, they print squares and scarves for museums and art foundations around the world.
