The emotional power of paper

  • • Anja has a background in textile design
  • • She defines her work as a perpetual work in progress
  • • Her connection to nature is the essence of her inspiration

Anja Madsen Pernot has cultivated her fascination for paper since childhood. Born in Denmark, the paper cut-outs of author H. C. Andersen and the country's Easter paper traditions sparked her first inspirations. Since then, paper has always followed her. Even while studying textile design, Anja found ways to explore the intimate connection between fabric and paper. In constant evolution, her work confronts classical techniques with those borrowed from other disciplines, such as the photographic cyanotype process, to find ever new expressions. The sensitivity and fragility of Anja’s artworks stems from her wonder at nature: the calligraphic shadows of the trees at sunset, bird songs at night, reflections on water. “It is this poetry that leads me to creation,” she explains.

Firebirds series

Standing in a rectangular shape, the composition of this bright bas-relief is made of many feather-like shaped strips of papers, which are overlayed. The natural colour of the rag paper, burnt on the cut edges, the ink blue, and some touches of bright colours such as the blue of cyanotype, Turkish blue and green create a harmonious palette. Several techniques were used in the making of this artwork.

This vibrant bas-relief is made of sculpted paper. The piece is composed of several small paper cuts in the shape of feathers, which are superimposed. The natural colour of the rag paper, burnt on the cut edges, and the ink-blue paper, interact with some touches of bright colours. Various techniques were applied to the making of the composition, including hand-cut paper, cyanotype – a photographic printing process – and collage.

Standing in a rectangular frame, this bas-relief is made of hand cut sculpted paper. Small feather-like strips of cut paper are superimposed to create the bright composition. The natural white of the rag paper, burnt on the cut edges, dominates the colour palette together with the ink blue paper, and interact with subtle touches of light colours such as Turkish blue, and beige.
