The textile wizard

  • • Aimee masters knotting, braiding and embroidery techniques
  • • She is a tutor at Goldsmiths, University of London
  • • She made a wearable piece with yarn created from waste carrier bags

From lamps to jewellery, soft furnishings and furniture; Aimee Betts has worked with them all. Looking at the wooden pull handles she intricately works into small masterpieces by applying fibre and leather cords into rich patterns, one can realise the fine mastery that goes into her creations. Her approach to making is usually process driven, she loves to explore materials and techniques and apply them to different surfaces. This theme of making her own cords and applying them to 3D surfaces is central to Aimee’s practice. Following a BA in Multi Media Textile Design from Loughborough University, and an MA in Constructed Textiles (Mixed Media) from the Royal College of Art, London, she moved into her first shared workshop in South East London in 2011.

Ricasso Loop Mirror

The Ricasso Loop Mirror is a circular mirror made from a two-inch rolled brass tube frame, finished with a dark bronze patina. The frame is decorated with a black veg tanned leather cord using a technique known as looping. In the centre of the frame there is a circular mirror with a bevelled edge. There is a visible gap between the frame and the mirror, as the mirror is suspended on small brackets that are connected to the frame.

Orb Table Lamp

The Orb Table Lamp is comprised of a sphere base on a stand, and is made from timber hand turned on a lathe. The lamp base is hand painted in a trout colour, and then hand knotted with natural leather cord, using a sailor’s knot known as a Carrick bend. The knots are linked together and ‘hold hands’ around the sphere, but do not completely cover the base, allowing the painted colour to show through.
