Painting with precious stones

  • • Yoko won the 2013 Montblanc Young Artist Patronage Award
  • • She created watch dials in partnership with Vacheron Constantin
  • • Her 'paint' is a combination of Chinese ink and precious stone powder

Paris-based Japanese artist Yoko Imai began to learn about calligraphy and painting at the early age of just five. After years of studying under several great masters to attain a professional level in calligraphy, she continued her studies at university, taking Zen philosophy and art history. After a long period of personal research and experimentation, she developed her technical skills to create a unique style of painting based on mixing pearl ink with small quantities of diamond. She has now mastered the craft of applying precious metal and stone powders to surfaces, an artistic technique that is one of a kind. She is inspired by music, particularly classical, contemporary and jazz.

Fugue No 7

Yoko drew her inspiration for this piece from JS Bach’s Fugue No 7 in D minor. The painting’s three lines echo the score’s trio of melodies: a principal diamond-and-pearl line, followed by a dotted one that is nuanced with lapis lazuli, and both merged with a final, intense, black line.

Sur Incises

Sur Incises by Pierre Boulez was the inspiration for this piece. The sparkling dots and the diamond line translate the first explosive sounds, followed by the harmony of the piano, harp and percussion. Marked by intense traces, the clear black line shows the complete melody of the piano.

Ouverture festive

This artwork is inspired by D Schostakovich’s Festive Overture in A major. The structure of the painting is based on a typical Shostakovich composition: the waves symbolise the melodies, and the many dots in different colours of precious stone powder relate to the variety of instruments played.
