From graphic design to ceramics

  • • Sebastian trained in raku techniques with his mother
  • • Karak creates tiles with fire, water, sawdust
  • • No two tiles are the same

Karak collective founder Sebastian Rauch and his partner Thomas Rösler are devoted to perfecting imperfection. Sebastian discovered and developed Japanese raku tile techniques by training with his mother, Marta Rauch-Debevec. Six years ago, he abandoned his desk job as a graphic designer and became certified in the ancient raku firing process. He started his own workshop after shaping smouldering red hot tiles in the workshop of his parents for many years.

KuQua-Hex, R/black

The hexagonal KuQua-Hex tiles introduce an oriental aspect to Karak’s designs. With their repetitive, regular pattern, the tiles are mesmerising, capturing the attention and relaxing the mind, much like a mandala or looking through a kaleidoscope.

KuQua-One, R/white

When the KuQua-One tiles are juxtaposed, they create an undulating and meditative pattern that spreads over the surface like a net.

TaOk

With their raised design based on a rounded square and petal-shaped cut-out, the raku-fired TaOk tiles can serve as free-standing objects in a play of dimensions and optical illusion.
