The modern face of silversmithing

  • • Nicolas creates his own contemporary pieces
  • • He won the Prix Liliane Bettencourt pour l'intelligence de la main in 2015
  • • He is a former Olympic water polo player

Nicolas Marischael is the third generation in his family to master two very different activities – silversmithing and water polo. His grandfather specialised in making cutlery and his father became a well-known restorer of silverware. Both were also water polo players, his grandfather having created a water polo club in Paris and his father being president of one of France’s most prestigious teams. So it was natural that Nicolas would get a taste for both – and both is what he did. At the age of 17 he started an apprenticeship in silversmithing with his father while also training to compete in the Olympics.

Impact

The design of this contemporary sterling silver champagne bucket breaks with classical codes of silver tableware design. The geometric and architectural lines of the handmade piece are typical of Nicolas’ work and exemplify the silversmith’s control of each movement.

Osmos

Osmos is a solid silver perfume diffuser inspired by the oloid form discovered by Paul Schatz in 1929 and filled with scented beads. When the diffuser is hung up, its mass provides the necessary inertia to cause a rotating movement, allowing the air to circulate and release the scent from the beads. The idea behind the diffuser, designed by Felipe Ribon and executed by master silversmith Nicolas Marischael, was to revisit a “cassolette” (small container) made by master goldsmith Daniel-Jean Joubert in 1750.

Sphère Tea Set

Sphère represents a unique sculptural approach to the traditional tea set, opening an original dialogue between wood and silver. This handmade tea set is composed of four complementary spheres, each with a specific function: samovar, burner, teapot and tea box. The piece is one of a limited series of ten.

Sphère Tea Pot

This handmade solid silver teapot looks as if it is floating weightlessly above its base, to which it is connected at only two discreet points. The handle, made of silver and precious wood, follows the spherical curve of the teapot, also connected to the base by a barely visible silver joint. The piece is one of a limited series of ten.
