Telling stories with embroidery

  • • Ekceli in Esperanto means 'a thought communicated through a craft'
  • • Marie believes in the importance of passing on skills
  • • She incorporates symbolism into her work

In 2008, Marie Berthouloux enrolled in fashion studies and set out to be a designer. In her search for fabrics, she became frustrated when she could not find the ones she was looking for. When she discovered a craftsmanship diploma at Rochefort specialising in metallic embroidery, she “fell in love”. Specialising in textile design, she learned how to create a variety of textiles and techniques, from weaving, knitting and crochet to dyeing. From there, she decided to launch her own business, Ekceli. She started working on fashion items before naturally turning towards artworks. Her wish is for metallic embroidery to have a place in the world of interior design and for works to be seen as art objects in their own right.

Ekceli Basa Basalt 2

This wall hanging was inspired by the textures and colours of the minerals, rocks and soil sediments of Icelandic landscapes. The embroidery incorporates lava rock, metallic micro-sculptures and iron fragments with copper reflections. Areas of anthracite and hematite contrast with shades of brown and white chalk.

A profusion of soft fur and feathers creates a surprising textured wall panel , made out of faded leather embroidered with cannetille thread and adorned with crystal beads. The generous volumes bring the space to life.

Mineral

This panel of Alcantara fabric was embroidered with cannetille thread in the shape of tree branches, hung with beads and metallic elements. Marie was commissioned to create this piece as a showcase for a luxury brand.

The hemp and linen fabric was handwoven in western France and was inspired by Toile de Jouy, a white fabric printed with a monochrome pastoral design. Marie has added her personal touch by embroidering the piece with gold thread and clusters of beads.

Troposphère

Leaves and wisps of cloud embroidered in cannetille thread drift over the white canvas in a discreet, feminine and harmonious pattern. Copper pistils fan out like rays of light, each one finished with a small bead. Here shown in small format, the composition can be made to cover a whole wall.
