The architect of clay

  • • Iosifina discovered her love for clay at a very young age
  • • Her craft helps her to get to know herself better
  • • Her work is characterised by curves and balance between opposites

Iosifina Kosma discovered her love of clay from a young age and over the years has experimented with a variety of different techniques and styles. A characteristic feature of her work is the curve which is the first shape her hands instinctively create when she holds a piece of clay. For Iosifina, the moment of inspiration is a blessing and she refrains from over-analysing it, allowing the process of creation to guide her. For her latest line of artworks, she has created abstract, asymmetrical, sculptural forms. Working with stoneware clay, she crafts her artworks piece by piece and then connects all the parts together to bring her vision to life.

Flow

This piece, part of Iosifina’s Flow series, explores curves. Using stoneware clay, Iosifina shapes organic forms, drawing on the form of an embrace and the warmth it provides. Everything is found in the balance between opposites: the inner becomes outer, the concave contrasts with the convex and the bright alternates with the dark. The coexistence of these opposites alludes to the complexity and harmony of nature itself.

She draws her inspiration from the movement of an embrace and the warmth that this action provides, as well as natural plant and shell forms. Everything is found in the balance between opposites: the inner becomes outer, the concave becomes convex and the bright alternates with the dark. The coexistence of these opposites alludes to the complexity and harmony of nature itself.

The coexistence of these opposites alludes to the complexity and harmony of nature itself.

Female form

While this work is figurative, Iosifina did not aim for a realistic representation. She considers the female form as a symbol rather than a literal representation of an individual. Female characteristics such as strength, protection and completeness are qualities that she wants to express. Starting from a curvy body, Iosifina became increasingly interested in the composition and harmony of the volumes; the pose has become unrealistic to suit the composition of the form.
