From luxury cars to silver sculpting

  • • Kevin used to make parts for Rolls Royce and Bentley
  • • He combines traditional and industrial techniques
  • • The simplicity of 1960s Danish design informs his work

For over 25 years Kevin Grey worked in factories making metal parts for luxury cars, but as the industry became less about human skill and more about machines, Kevin felt a desire to return to making things by hand. Fractured

This laser-welded piece made from 958 Britannia silver was commissioned by the Makower Silver Collection for the National Museum of Wales. An oxidised vessel with linear decoration, it was inspired by the mining industry.

Cygnus

This sterling silver TIG-welded piece reflects on the first discovered black hole; the edge denotes the event’s horizon. Simple forms conveyed through lines and volume are essential to Kevin’s vision of beauty.

Animus

Made from TIG-welded 925 sterling silver, Animus was created as a response to continuous revolving thought, a fractured, torturous process. In 2017, this piece achieved a record-breaking figure for a contemporary silversmith auction.

Chiral Vase

This 952 Britannia silver and gold piece is asymmetric in such a way that the structure and its mirror image are not superimposable.

Serriform Black

Kevin explores the contrasting relationship between the smooth interior of this raised and planished bowl with its irregular exterior. The meeting creates an unplanned jagged or serriform edge.
