This neo-Gothic stained-glass window in the Church of St Catherine in Bethlehem (a UNESCO world heritage site) was a gift from the Belgian State in 1926. The original window, created by brothers Paul and Marcel Ganton, was badly damaged during the second intifada and subsequently restored by Atelier Mestdagh in 2004.

Stained glass for the modern world

Katrien Mestdagh is a stained glass artisan who also holds a master’s in stained glass conservation and heritage management. She represents the third generation of Atelier Mestdagh, which was founded in 1947 by her grandfather Albert, who had trained in one of the most important Neo-Gothic workshops in Ghent. After Albert passed away in 1972, his son Luc took over the business, preserving the same techniques and knowledge that his father and his master craftsmen had taught him. Luc’s wife Ingrid Meyvaert, who specialises in designing stained glass windows, was always at his side. Thanks to her, the workshop started to use stained glass in modern architecture, thus matching traditional craftsmanship with contemporary innovation.

The Eucharist, St Aldegundis Church (Deurle)
This contemporary stained-glass window is part of a series of four windows, two of which depict the church’s patron saints, St Aldegundis and St Christoffel. The other two depict two of the sacraments, the Eucharist and Baptism. The neo-Roman church is situated in a picturesque painters’ village in the Flemish part of Belgium.

St John the Baptist, St Johns Church
This contemporary stained-glass window is located in the transept of a small Roman church near the River Lys. The window depicts John the Baptist and Christ, along with a dove and flowing water, references to St John and the proximity of the Lys.

Stained-glass series, floor lamp
This floor lamp is an example of how the boundaries of traditional leaded-glass techniques and materials can be pushed to create a contemporary three-dimensional design object. It was presented by Doppia Firma during Milan Design Week in 2019.
