A modern alchemist

  • • David is attracted to seemingly impossible concepts
  • • He is known for his innovative approach to the technique of granulation
  • • His works are shown in galleries and museums worldwide

Belgian silversmith David Huycke has worked as an independent artist since 1993. “Becoming an artist was actually more a vocation than a choice,” he says. “When I went to art school I decided upon the metal and jewellery studio and quite quickly I found myself very happy working there. I discovered that the contact with materials and techniques, especially metals, was very exciting.” He first made a name for himself with his sets of dishes, his simple design and his subtle use of materials. Today he specialises in granulation within larger silverwork, both as a decorative surface application and a construction method. He is also a professor at the PXL-MAD School of Arts Hasselt and at Hasselt University, Belgium

Bolinder 3

Both Bolinder 3 cups were made of silver. By treating the material differently for each – one is left dark and rough, the other is smoothly sanded – David investigates matter and ways of dealing with it. Since the juxtaposition of these two pieces is integral to the idea, they are considered to be one object.

Bolrond 3

Bolrond 3 is one of the first minimalist works David ever made. It consists of three nested hammered bowls, partly stained black to produce sharp contrasts in the overall appearance of the composition. Even if each element taken separately is a functional bowl, Bolrond 3 is to be considered a sculptural object.

Dark Moon

Dark Moon is a monolithic, spherical object. On its top are thousands of fine silver balls creating a perfect circle, a reference to the dark side of the moon. It was created using granulation, which is a decorative technique whereby the silversmith arranges small grains of silver in an ornamental pattern on a silver surface using heat fusion.

Order & Chaos #1

Order & Chaos #1 is an object consisting of two contrasting parts – a perfect hammered silver sphere and a chaotic structure in welded steel balls – which represents the duality of order and chaos.

Pearl Chaos

Pearl Chaos is a silver object built with more than 25,000 individual silver spheres using the technique of constructive granulation. The little balls or granules were put together in a chaotic arrangement, while usually spheres have the tendency to order themselves in geometric patterns. Pearl Chaos has a weight of more than 4kg, which is exceptional for granulation.
