Telling stories through jewellery

  • • Pierce made rings for Peter Jackson’s movie Mortal Engines
  • • As a musician, he has recorded five albums
  • • He used to be a stand-up comedian in San Francisco

A natural born storyteller, Irishman Pierce has been trying to tell those stories in different creative ways his whole life. His first love – “my foundation and my fuel” – is music. He has been writing and playing guitar since he was a teenager, and it was music that brought him to jewellery making. Years ago he and his band moved to San Francisco, and whilst living there he stumbled across a shop selling gold panning equipment and jewellery making tools. He bought some materials and started to experiment. After much trial and error, he started to develop the type of work he is now known for: engraved silver and gold jewellery that tells his subversive, surreal, funny or macabre stories.

Memory Map

This sterling silver pendant was engraved and oxidised by hand. The pendant is worn with a simple leather strap. Notions of memory inspired the design: “Where did all those yesterdays go? It seems like it was yesterday, yesterday. And I was laughing so loud I didn’t see you leave.”

Stable Meal

Three hand-shaped sterling silver rings have been placed on a pewter tray which is engraved with a scene of sea monsters. The three rings were inspired by a dream-like universe: “Fake it 'til you die. That’s the secret to success, and perfect teeth. Make stuff and be curious. Scream when a train goes by.”

Galaxy of Possibilities

Pierce has engraved this oxidised sterling silver ring by hand with patterns inspired by a fantastical universe: “Beware, these magical rings make your lies come true. Come away with me, we’ll fly through the trees at dawn and cast spells on the politicians. We don’t need money, we’ll sing for bread and jam and coffee, and live like pirates. Meet me at the sea’s edge, or a Dublin pub”.

Free facial scrub with every kiss

This oxidised sterling silver ring was engraved by hand. “Your being is a collection of self-organising atoms. You don’t see this order as beauty, because you perceive only the function: your lumpy body. But that is quite the feat: you are perfect and unbearably beautiful and also impervious to that perfect beauty. Wear your indifference like armour.”

Do you come here often? Would you like a drink?

This oxidised sterling silver ring was engraved by hand. “Earthly burdens for beasts of all kinds. An oversized, wearable topography of scored cuts, etched layers, raised lumps and torn bumps, and your map to the edge of the volcano. Pocked, lined, and gouged, like your ego on Sunday morning.”
