Bringing new life to an age-old tradition

  • • Marie offers a contemporary vision of lacquering
  • • Her works are entirely handmade
  • • She has developed her own artistic language

Marie de La Roussière graduated in architectural decoration specialising in lacquer from ENSAAMA in Paris, the only European training school in which the three main lacquer techniques are taught: vegetable lacquer, European oil varnish and water-soluble lacquer. When Marie first encountered lacquer, it was love at first sight. She found that combining different materials and techniques with lacquer could spark an artist's imagination. In 2010, Marie opened her lacquer workshop specialising in custom-made creations, from decorative panels to musical instruments. By combining tradition with a contemporary vision, her lacquerwork offers an infinite number of possibilities.

Urban Archaeology

Marie began to focus on the theme of cities in 2010, exploring all the layers of buildings from basement to rooftop in a series of dreamlike cityscapes. In “Urban Archaeology”, a tall curving sculpture of lacquered steel, Marie reveals the mysteries of an imagined basement.

Berlin

Marie’s travels through the heart of cities began in 2010, using dreamlike compositions to guide viewers through the hidden nooks and crannies of our cityscapes. In this decorative panel she offers a glimpse of Berlin. Through the skilful use of colour and graphic elements, her lacquered pieces amplify her impressions of each city’s specific atmosphere.

Clavecin de l’école française du XVIIIème d’après François Blanchet

Marie regularly works with other master artisans, believing the diversity of talent to be synonymous with cultural wealth. She has lacquered several harpsichords in collaboration with the Parisian workshop of Reinhard von Nage. The lacquer brings a contemporary touch of bright colour to this harpsichord built in the traditional design of the 18th-century French school.

Little Manhattan

This lacquered wood panel is part of Marie’s series on the theme of cities. Here we see the buildings of Manhattan silhouetted against a sky of patinated copper. Deep black lacquer evokes rust, and bronze powders become autumn leaves. Through the skilful use of colour and graphic elements, the lacquered pieces amplify Marie’s impressions of the city’s special atmosphere.

Rêves de Lunes

This lacquered wood panel, “Dreams of Moons”, was created for the 2019 biennale Révélations held in the Grand Palais in Paris. The piece depicts a number of colourful moons rising over an ethereal background.
