Exploring life and death in porcelain

  • • Juliette lives and works near Bordeaux
  • • She has studied art history, law, sculpture and graphic design
  • • She collaborates with the bone china factory in Limoges La Seynie

French artist Juliette Clovis deals with three main subjects in her work, all of which have in common opposition and duality: human beings and nature; life and death; tradition and modernity. She currently works mainly with sculpture in her favorite medium: porcelain. For years, her work revolved around female identity and the representation of women, however since 2015, nature has been the dominating theme. She has also exchanged two dimensions for three, challenging herself with very difficult technique of working porcelain. This material allows her to marry her contemporary vision of art with traditional techniques and technology.

Cyanolica Nana

For years, Juliette has explored notions of feminine identity as well as the representation of women in contemporary society and in history. In her series of porcelain busts, women metamorphose into hybrid beings, a clever blend of history, myths and dreams. The female figure is invaded by a profusion of fauna and flora, nature both sweet and disturbing. Like a new Hitchcock scene, you can almost hear the sounds of the jungle: the fluttering of a bird's wings, the slither of a snake.

The sculptures that form Juliette’s Kinetic Garden series are composed of hundreds and sometimes thousands of scales in white porcelain, coloured or plated with precious metals. This particular work is more subtle in its choice of colours, characteristic of the baroque influence on Juliette.

In her series of porcelain busts, women metamorphose into hybrid beings, a clever blend of history, myths and dreams. Fascinated by the wild beauty of nature, Juliette draws on this to create human jungles and question the links and powerful relationships that unite man with nature.

Medusa

For years, Juliette has explored notions of feminine identity as well as the representation of women in contemporary society and in history. Juliette's busts oscillate between a prophetic picture announcing the birth of a new species, a human figure with a half-animal, half-vegetal face; and certain death caused by a greedy Mother Nature eager to take back her rights.
