Stained glass in three dimensions

  • • Camille works with layers of float glass shaped into coloured vessels
  • • Her inspirations include nature, science, art history and photography
  • • She uses traditional stained glass painting techniques

“My goal is to achieve a perfect balance between shape, dimension, medium and colour,” says Camille Jacobs, who lives and works in Keispelt, Luxembourg. Through a long process of experimentation she developed her passion for glass, a complex and sometimes unpredictable medium. Camille studied stained glass at the Saint-Luc Institute of Fine Arts in Ghent, Belgium. Her work quickly evolved from traditional stained glass panels to three-dimensional objects, often with geometrical influences. Her works have been exhibited in galleries and shows across Europe and as far away as Japan.

The Pond

This black and white glass vase is part of a series created by Camille as a tribute to the photographer Edward Steichen (1879–1973), who was a major contributor to the Pictorialism movement. The movement claimed photography to be an art in its own right. Here, Camille transposes some key features of Edward Steichen’s favourite subject, the pond. The vase is composed of several layers of float glass, painted, fused, slumped and polished.

After Image

Through this polychrome vase, Camille explores the topics of visual perception and optical illusion, overlaying two interpretations of the same landscape. She first created a chromatic study and then an optical illusion. The vase is composed of several layers of float glass, painted, fused, slumped and polished.

Voltaic Spring

This vase is one of a series of four triangular vessels representing the four seasons, an environment threatened by global warming. The colours and geometric patterns of each vessel reflect the mood of each season. Global warming is symbolised by the dynamic application of overlapping colours. The vase is composed of several layers of float glass, painted, fused, slumped and polished.
